Uncolored engraving depicting a large crowd of men, women, and children gathered on the beach around the carcass of a beached whale. Some men are engaged in measuring or climbing onto the animal. Sand dunes and cloudbanks in the background. In lower margin the artist attributions and the title (in Dutch, left, and French, right) are printed, along with a vignette side view of the same whale, captioned "de vis van afteren".
Title translates to "Here is shown a curious crowd, looking at this Fish, which is more than 62 feet long, on the sandy shore. Tossed out from the Dutch sea by a storm."
