A view of Peterhead Bay in the early nineteenth century. The natural harbor is busy with maritime activity. Ships of the British Naval services, indicated by their ensigns with the Union Jack in the canton, anchor in the safety of breakwaters. Whaling, fishing, and shipbuilding were active industries of the town, and masts fill up part of the city's skyline where the shipbuilding dockyard was located. In the foreground are shoals in which men in top hats and their dogs sit or partake in recreational sailing activities.
