A starboard-side view of the steam-powered yacht sailing near an iceberg in the Arctic. Originally a British navy gunboat named HMS 'Pandora,' she was sold as a private yacht to the British explorer Allen Young. He took her on two voyages to the Arctic before selling her to James Gordon Bennett, Jr., who changed her name to 'Jeannette.' During her trip to the Arctic under Bennett, she sailed under the U. S. flag as a USS vessel even though Bennett remained responsible for the cost of the expedition. In 1879, she became trapped in ice and remained there for two years before being crushed by ice.
