In the background at left is another vessel and a coastal building; in the background at right is a collection of large ships, likely the Squadron. The "Royal Sovereign" herself is three-masted, and flies a British naval jack at stern and a flag bearing the royal insignia. The title indicates that the Dutchess of Clarence (formerly Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meningen and later Queen Adelaide of Britain) was on board the "Royal Sovereign".
