AF-WB-0755.T.jpg

Colored engraving of a whaling scene. There are two mostly submerged whales, and five boats of men with harpoons, in the foreground. One of the whales is in the process of tipping over a rowboat with its tail. In the boat, one man has been thrown onto his back, while his comrade flounders in the water by the whale's tail and a pair of hats bob upon the waves surrounding the boat. A third man is depicted midair, neatly and bloodlessly severed in two at the waistline. In the distance is a large three-masted ship and a mountainous shoreline. Below the image is the text, "THE DANGERS OF THE WHALE FISHERY." and "W. Wright."
